UNICEF: Technical Advisor/Developer

The Youth Section is in the Division of Communication at UNICEF Headquarters. We are dynamic team of about 12 people who work on various new and traditional media and technology projects aimed at a youth audience.

We are looking for an individual consultant who is passionate about technology and the development sector and has a comprehensive understanding of Information Technology to work on several web / new media projects for UNICEF. This person will be full-time and should be willing to work in New York City, with some travel. The initial contract will be for six (6) months with a strong possibility of extension.

We are looking for an experienced Technical Advisor/Developer to:

  • Serve as the lead developer on the Voices of Youth website.
  • Manage Amazon EC2 hosting for the Voices of Youth website.
  • Manage the hosting of miscellaneous other Rails and Wordpress websites.
  • Advise Project Managers on technology solutions related to their projects.
  • Participate in defining project vision and strategy with Project Managers.
  • Interface with external technology / developer groups for the section.
  • Research appropriate software and hardware options as needed, and provide accurate documentation of all research to project participants.

Qualifications or specialized knowledge/experience required:

  • Strong comprehension of theory related to human interaction with websites, information architecture, usability, accessibility, and interaction design
  • Expertise in all related technology and processes involved in the coordination of website development
  • In-depth knowledge of project planning and iterative development
  • Strong programming background including expertise in Ruby
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, and jQuery
  • Strong knowledge of web to mobile interaction
  • Proven experience creating mobile and web applications
  • Strong organizational and detail oriented skills
  • Ability to advise software development, remotely if required
  • Proven ability to deliver under tight deadlines
  • Experience with youth development issues
  • Experience coordinating complex projects
  • Experience coordinating website development
  • Ability to travel when necessary
