U.S.News &World Report: Content Engineer

(Washington, DC)

U.S.News & World Report is seeking a Content Engineer to help manage our large, diverse and growing body of content. We need someone who can think strategically about metadata, taxonomies and business goals, but is also not afraid to write scripts that manipulate tens of thousands of documents at a time.

Duties will include:

- taking the lead in migrating content between different internal systems and delivery platforms

- deploying metadata and taxonomies to maximize the value of content

- working with editorial, business and technical divisions to achieve business goals, including search engine optimization, maximizing online ad revenue, content licensing, and repurposing of archived content.

The only absolute requirements are:

* Core understanding of XML, including schemas and at least one XML programming API (DOM, XSLT, SAX, lxml, or even Beautiful Soup).

* Competence in at least one general-purpose scripting language such as Perl, Python or Ruby. 

* Successful completion of at least one project involving manipulation of thousands (or more) text documents.

Some skills or accomplishments that would be a plus for this position include:

* Degree in library science, information systems, computer science or business.

* Experience with one or more Web content management systems (e.g. Drupal, WordPress, Plone).

* experience working in a Unix/Linux environment.

* Experience with one or more relational databases (Postgres, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server).

* Understanding of regular expressions.

* Knowledge of SEO best practices.

* Experience with online advertising.

* Knowledge of emerging display formats such as HTML5.

* Experience with a Web analytics system such as Google Analytics or Omniture.
