USA TODAY: Graphic Designer

(McLean, VA 22107)

The Graphic Designer is responsible for the design and execution of marketing materials that promote the USA TODAY brand. Assignments include a broad spectrum of multimedia, digital, mobile and print projects that position USA TODAY as a marketplace leader to current and prospective customers.  The ideal candidate will have a pretty even or 60/40 split of digital/video and print experience.

The position reports to the Senior Creative Services Manager and works closely with other members of the Marketing department. The candidate must have the ability to lead and participate in brainstorming sessions to identify a strategic vision in order to quickly develop creative executions across multiple platforms. Interacts well with Project Managers and clients as well as mentors designers and interns. The position requires project management, multimedia and web development skills and knowledge of printing and production. The Graphics Designer must be proficient in these design programs (listed in order of emphasis):

InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Flash, Adobe I Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Fireworks, Final Cut Pro, Microsoft Office Suite and FileMaker Pro.

The candidate develops creative solutions and concepts to communicate USA TODAY’s value proposition to current and prospective customers. Works with in-house and external clients to deliver marketing campaigns. Is responsible for the strategy, development and execution of all multimedia projects, including commercials, promotional videos, web sites and web banner ads that promote current and emerging USA TODAY platforms. Finally the candidate will be an innovative thinker, highly motivated with excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.  Have the ability to conceptualize and execute a creative vision effectively under tight deadlines. Be skilled at project management and ability to communicate effectively with clients. Have a strong desire to lead and mentor designers and interns. And stays current with the latest multimedia, web, print and consumer marketing trends in order to effectively develop design solutions.

 Requirements

The successful candidate must have: a  Bachelors degree with a concentration in graphic design, visual communications or fine arts. At least 6 years of design experience in an in-house creative department or agency. Familiar with brand principles and consumer marketing to develop effective design solutions. Responsible for creative development of multimedia, web, mobile and print campaigns. Knowledge of motion graphics, visual effects, video production, editing, HTML, CSS and Flash animation. Knowledge of traditional and digital printing processes and strong typography skills .Ability to plan, organize, identify problems and correct design issues under tight deadlines.

Ability to quickly develop and/or interpret a creative idea into a design execution. Handle design projects from initial concept to final production. Ability to pay attention to detail with sound grammar, spelling and punctuation skills. Demonstrated independent creative thinking and excellent follow through. Must analyze what design approach best suits the needs of a particular project. Be able to work in a fast-paced, hectic environment where priorities are constantly changing. Must be able to adapt to work schedule to fit business needs.
