Role:

This position requires the Engineer to aid in the research, development, and testing of algorithms, with an emphasis on customer satisfaction / revenue positive algorithms. Candidates will be expected to evaluate existing algorithms, propose solutions for problems based on careful analysis, code (or assist/direct) proof-of-concept software, and assess performance on realistic datasets. Candidates should have general knowledge in the fields of machine learning, pattern recognition, probability theory, image/video processing, and basic software development.

Typical candidates for this role would have developed data mining algorithms using huge data sets and have also built large scale data processing/analytics systems incorporating them. This is a hands on role, and it is ideal for someone that has experience with large amounts of sparse data.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop mathematical modeling and computational social algorithms to help identify, analyze, and predict consumer behaviors and identify product opportunity spaces
  • Measure the relative effectiveness of various coupon types, page designs, coupon formats, ad formats
  • Discover new predictors of coupon quality.
  • Research on how changes in content impacts user behavior.
  • Develop meaningful statistical segmentations of our user base.
  • Provide general guidance on quantitative analysis methods to WSM engineers and decision-makers.
  • Work with product management, customer operations, and other engineers to understand algorithmic problems, and then, develop innovative solutions to the problems.
  • Implement and test new algorithms for quantifiable impact as well as performance.

Requirements:

  • PhD preferred in CS or statistics, applied mathematics, operation research or related field; or MS with equivalent experience.
  • Substantial real-world experience, especially in areas of data analysis and visualization, including love for testing
  • Expertise in statistical software (R, S-Plus, SAS, or similar).
  • Familiarity with machine learning and experiment design principles.
  • Proficiency with databases and scripting or programming languages My SQL, (C#, C++, PHP and Java are the most commonly used in our engineering environment).
  • Ability to draw conclusions from data and recommend actions.
  • Demonstrated willingness to both teach others and learn new techniques.
  • Demonstrates ability to think through structure and effectively communicate with other engineers.
  • Experience implementing data mining and machine learning algorithms.
  • Experience analyzing large volumes of data.
  • Experience with quantitative research, market microstructure, and trading systems are highly desired.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to rapidly develop solutions to complex problems that involve both elegant software design and deep analytical thinking.
